A registered agent is the person or company that receives legal and government mail for your business. It is a legal appointment. Lawsuits, tax notices, annual report reminders and state correspondence all land at that address.

All 50 states require a registered agent with a physical street address in the state. A P.O. box will not do. The agent has to be there through business hours to accept service of process.

You can serve as your own agent if you have an address in the state. Many owners do. The trade is that your home address becomes public record, and you have to be there in person to sign. Miss a process server and you can default on a lawsuit you never heard about.

A registered agent service handles all of this for you. Price is where buyers get caught. It gives your filings a commercial address, takes the documents, and emails you scans within hours. The prices in the table above spread much wider than the service does, so read that table rather than assume a going rate.

Registered agent services all work roughly the same way:

1. You name them as your registered agent. When forming your LLC (or switching from an existing agent), you list the service's address on your state filings. It goes on the public record.
2. They receive your legal mail. Anything served on your business goes to the agent's address. Lawsuits, subpoenas, tax notices, annual report reminders.
3. They scan and forward documents. Most scan everything same-day and email you. Some also post the file to an online dashboard.
4. They send compliance reminders. Good ones remind you when annual reports or franchise taxes are due. That is how you stay in good standing.

Forwarding speed is not a convenience feature. Federal Rule of Civil Procedure 12 gives a defendant 21 days after being served to serve an answer. The clock starts when your agent takes the papers. It does not wait for the scan.

Where services differ is narrower than the price gap suggests. Response time, same-day or next-day. Whether general business mail is forwarded too. How compliance reminders are handled. And whether the address is one you can put on business cards and bank forms.

The price on a registered agent's website is not always the price you pay. Here is the real math.

The biggest trap is the free first year bundled with formation. ZenBusiness and LegalZoom both do it. Year one costs nothing, then year two jumps to $199 or $249. Northwest bundles a free year with its $39 formation too, and renews at $125, which is still the cheaper two year window.

You are allowed to be your own registered agent in most states, and it costs $0. Here is what that means in practice.

Your home address goes on public record. Your agent address sits in your state's business database, which anyone can search. Use your home and it is public. Data brokers, junk mailers and anyone who looks up your filing can find it. A separate business address is the usual fix. The one you buy still has to survive payment processor and Google Business Profile checks.

You have to be physically present. Agents must be at the listed address through business hours to accept service. If a process server arrives and nobody is there, you are not served. That is not a reprieve. You may learn about the lawsuit after you have already defaulted.

It does not work across state lines. If your LLC is formed in Delaware but you live in California, you cannot be your own agent in Delaware. Presence is the point. The state wants a body at an address inside its own borders.

A registered agent service costs money every year, and the prices in the table above spread far wider than the service does. For most owners it is worth it. For that money you get a commercial address on your filings, someone available through business hours, and same-day scans of anything received.

Switching registered agents takes about 10 minutes and costs nothing in most states. Here is the process:

1. Sign up with your new registered agent. They need your business name, state of formation and entity type. Most services take the paperwork from here.
2. File a change of agent form. Each state has its own form, usually a Statement of Change or an Amendment. Your new agent normally files it for you at no extra charge. Some states charge a filing fee.
3. Notify your old agent. Tell them you are switching. They can then forward any pending mail and close your account. Most services charge nothing to cancel.

The switch takes effect as soon as the state processes the filing, usually within a few business days. Order matters here. There is no gap in coverage if your new agent files the change before your old service expires.

One thing to watch. If your old agent came bundled with your formation package, canceling it may cancel other services too, such as compliance monitoring. Check your existing plan first.
