California publishes your agent's full name and street address on its free business search at bizfileonline.sos.ca.gov. Anyone can look. There are no anonymous LLCs here, the way there are in Wyoming or New Mexico. So the agent address is one of the few lines on the record you get to choose.

The compliance calendar is demanding. An initial Statement of Information is due within 90 days of registering, then every two years, at $20 a time. The $800 franchise tax is due by the 15th day of the 4th month. Miss the Statement of Information and the Franchise Tax Board collects a $250 penalty for the Secretary of State.

Since August 1, 2026, that filing needs permission first. The state now wants web User Access before the Statement of Information option shows up in bizfile Online. It posted the change as a customer service update, not a rule change. There is no paper version to fall back on. The Statement of Information is online only. So ask an agent a plain question. Will they hold access to your record and file for you, or send a reminder and leave the portal to you?

A second lock arrived a month before that one. Since July 1, 2026 the Secretary of State also requires Full Access to your entity record before you can close the LLC, and terminations run online only as well. The record now carries two access levels, one to keep the entity filing and a higher one to end it. Ask which level your agent holds, and if you hold it yourself, do not lose it.

Forming a new California LLC? A bundle like Bizee or ZenBusiness costs less in year one, Bizee because it includes the agent year outright and ZenBusiness because it halves that year to $99. Switching agents on an active LLC works differently. The mechanism is the Statement of Information itself. There is no separate form. That filing costs $20 and runs online only. Since August 1, 2026 it shows up in bizfile Online only for users who hold access. So ask two things, who files it and who holds the access. Registering an LLC you formed elsewhere is a different job, and California charges the same for it. The application to register is $70, the same as articles of organization, and the Statement of Information is the same $20 on the same clock. What changes is the agent. Section 17701.13 makes a California LLC keep both an office and an agent in the state, and asks a foreign one for the agent only. The same section limits who that agent can be, an individual who lives in California or a corporation filed under Section 1505. An owner living in another state has no version of this they can do themselves.

• Registering starts the $800 clock on its own - The Franchise Tax Board charges the annual tax to any LLC doing business in California or registered with the Secretary of State, and says it is due even in a year you conduct no business. An out-of-state LLC that registers here owes it from that point.
• Your agent can quit for free - A resignation of agent for service of process is filed online at no fee. Walking away costs the agent nothing, so ask about continuity before you shop on price.
• Mail forwarding is usually extra - most agents forward legal and state documents only. General mail is a separate product. Your California address does not come with it.

1. Establish User Access for your entity in bizfile Online. Do it first. Since August 1, 2026 the Statement of Information option only appears for users who have it, and you request access in the same portal.
2. File the initial Statement of Information within 90 days of registering. It is $20, online only. Missing it costs $250.
3. Pay the $800 franchise tax by the 15th day of the 4th month after formation. Use FTB Form 3522. It goes to the Franchise Tax Board, not the Secretary of State.
4. Apply for a federal EIN at irs.gov. It costs nothing. You need it before a bank account or a payroll.
5. Open a business bank account. Most California banks want the Articles of Organization, the EIN letter, and an operating agreement.
6. Turn on your agent's compliance alerts. Then check the date they hold, because the Statement of Information repeats in a six month window that ends with your registration anniversary month.
