ZenBusiness Overview

Two of the three ZenBusiness packages come back for money each year. The free one does not. That fact decides what ZenBusiness costs you, more than the $0 headline does. Pro renews at $199 a year. Premium renews at $399. Both figures come off their own package comparison, read on 16 August 2026.

So what does $0 buy? The filing itself, a name check, your papers in a dashboard, an accuracy promise and a 60 day money back window. The add-ons are where the money is. On Starter an EIN costs $99. So does an operating agreement. Rush filing is $79. The agent is the one most people buy.

True First-Year Cost

Year one is $209 on Starter. That is $0 for the package, $110 for the Delaware filing fee we use as our state proxy, and $99 for the agent. Year two is $199. The agent renews at full price. The package does not renew at all.

Checkout pushes the add-ons hard. Two of them start as trials and then bill you. The domain and website bundle costs $15 a month after 30 days. Money Pro costs $30 a month. Read the cart before you pay. The dashboard you land in is the best in this class, and that is most of why ZenBusiness ranks where it does in our formation service rankings.

What ZenBusiness Actually Costs

True Cost Analysis

Year 1 Total Cost

$209

Includes all fees + state filing

Year 2+ Annual Cost

$199

Recurring renewal fees

Two costs sit outside the $209 and either one can move it. Worry-Free Compliance is a free year on Starter. It then renews at $199. Leave it on and year two is $398, not $199. ZenBusiness also still lists the agent at $199 a year on its own package page, so check what your cart charges. One last thing. Every state makes you name an agent. No state makes you buy one from ZenBusiness. You can be your own for free.

ZenBusiness Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Starter is $0, you pay only the state fee
  • The dashboard is the clearest we have used
  • Phone support runs 7 days a week
  • A free first year of Worry-Free Compliance on Starter
  • Good mobile app, 4.6 stars on iOS

Cons

  • Heavy push for add-ons at checkout
  • On Starter the EIN, the operating agreement and the agent each cost extra, $99, $99 and $199 a year
  • Renewals climb, Pro at $199 a year and Premium at $399
  • Auto-renewing subscriptions are hard to cancel

Upsell Pressure & Hidden Fees

Transparency Check, We Documented Every Upsell

ZenBusiness leans on pre-checked add-ons and trials at checkout. Two of them convert on their own. The domain, email and website bundle is free for 30 days, then $15 a month. Money Pro is $30 a month. Worry-Free Compliance is a free year on Starter, then $199 a year. On Starter the EIN, the operating agreement and the documents library are $99 each. Rush filing is $79. The agent lists at $199 a year, cut to $99 for year one if you form with them. None of this is hidden. It is all published. But it is pre-selected or one click away, and the cart is where it adds up.

What Real Customers Say

Reddit / Community Sentiment

Reddit users acknowledge ZenBusiness's ease of use and $0 base plan as a great starting point for beginners, though a vocal segment advocates for DIY filing to avoid upsells. The community frequently cautions new founders to pay close attention to auto-renewing subscriptions for registered agent and compliance services.

Is ZenBusiness Right for You?

Best For These Founders

First-Time Founders

The setup asks plain questions and files the right form. You do not need to know the jargon first.

Budget-Conscious Entrepreneurs

Starter is $0 and never renews. You pay your state and stop.

Hands-Off Business Owners

Pro and Premium file your annual report for you and track the dates.

Consider Alternatives If…

  • You are happy to file your own annual report each year

  • You want privacy by default, without paying extra for it

  • You need real legal templates or a lawyer to talk to

What the Package Comparison Shows

ZenBusiness package comparison table showing Starter at $0 with no renewal, Pro at $199 renewing at $199 a year, and Premium at $399 renewing at $399 a year, with the EIN, operating agreement and registered agent priced as add-ons on Starter.
ZenBusiness prices its own renewals in the open. Captured 14 August 2026 and re-checked on 16 August.

The row to stare at is the agent. On Starter it is $199 a year. On Pro it is $199 a year too. Only Premium folds it in, and Premium renews at $399.

Support That Answers at the Weekend

ZenBusiness is good when you need help. We called, and we got clear answers fast. You can reach them by phone, chat or email. The phone lines run seven days a week.

Hours are 8am to 8pm Central on weekdays. Saturdays and Sundays run 9am to 6pm Central. Weekend cover is rare here. It matters if you are building a side business around a job. We read the hours off their contact page on 16 August 2026.

Worry-Free Compliance and the Free Year

Worry-Free Compliance files your annual report. It also covers up to two amendments a year. Pro and Premium include it. Starter gets one free year, and it is optional.

Then it renews at $199. Take the free year and forget it, and year two costs $398. That is $199 for the agent and $199 for compliance, on the package you picked because it was free. You can cancel it from the dashboard. Nothing prompts you to.

Velo, the Free AI Layer

Velo is the ZenBusiness AI assistant. It sits on every package, the $0 one included. So do the name generator, the entity quiz and the cost estimator. It is free to use, not a trial, which is worth saying plainly. Use it to plan, not to decide, because the same engine sells the add-ons.

Mobile App Experience

The app is good. It carries 4.6 stars on iOS. It is handy for checking your filing status and pulling documents. Weighing a branding first rival? Our Tailor Brands vs ZenBusiness comparison runs the cost math. For a flat price agent, read our Northwest review.

Final Verdict

4.5 / 5

ZenBusiness runs the smoothest filing in this category. The setup walks a first-time founder through every step, and the dashboard chases your deadlines for you. Starter is $0 and never renews, so a founder who buys nothing else pays the state and stops. The catch sits beside it. Pro renews at $199 a year and Premium at $399, and on Starter the EIN, the operating agreement and the agent are each priced on their own. A strong pick if you want a polished filing and you read the cart before you pay.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, near enough. The Starter package is $0 and it never renews. Forming your LLC costs you only the state filing fee. What comes after is where the money is. On Starter the registered agent runs $199 a year, an EIN is $99, and an operating agreement template is another $99. Most founders buy at least the agent.

No. Every state lets you serve as your own agent, and you can hire any other company instead. ZenBusiness charges $99 for the first year when you form with them, then $199 a year. Compare the second year, not the first. Northwest holds a flat price with no step up. One catch, your own address goes on the public record if you act as your own agent.

It files your state annual report and up to two amendments a year. Pro and Premium include it. Starter gets one optional free year, and then it renews at $199 a year. Put that date in your calendar. Take the free year, forget it, and your second year costs $199 more than you planned.

ZenBusiness handles Starter filings in 7 to 10 business days. Pro and Premium go in 1 business day. Those are their own numbers for preparing your papers and sending them in. The state adds its own wait on top. How long that takes varies a lot. Starter customers can buy the 1 day speed for $79.

No, Velo is free. Their AI assistant comes with every package including the $0 Starter. So do the name generator, the entity type quiz and the startup cost estimator. It is free to use rather than a trial that converts later. Treat it as a planning aid, not as advice. The same engine also sells you the add-ons.

Read the cart before you submit it. The domain and website bundle bills $15 a month once its 30 day trial ends, and Money Pro bills $30 a month. Both are offered by default rather than asked for. Uncheck what you do not want. If you only need the filing, your cart should show $0 plus your state fee.
