ZenBusiness

Get Started

Starts at $99/yr · No setup fees

ZenBusiness delivers a premium registered agent experience tailored perfectly for first-time founders. We love the modern dashboard and the rare inclusion of weekend customer support. The main drawback is the $199 annual renewal fee, which is pricier than some budget competitors. We highly recommend ZenBusiness if you value an easy-to-use digital portal and fast document delivery over securing the absolute lowest long-term price.

Pros

  • Immediate document scanning and upload to your dashboard
  • Clean, modern, and highly intuitive digital dashboard
  • Customer support available on weekends
  • Shields your personal home address from public records
  • Excellent user reviews across Trustpilot and app stores

Cons

  • Annual renewal rate increases to $199 after the first year
  • Cancellation requires contacting support via phone or chat
  • Frequent upsells for additional compliance and financial tools

Best for: First-time founders wanting a stress-free, all-in-one compliance dashboard

Harbor Compliance

Best Multi State
$99annual fee
3.4
Get Started

Starts at $99/yr · No setup fees

Harbor Compliance undercuts every national rival in year one at $99, and their multi-year plans keep that rate locked. Documents are delivered same day through the Entity Manager portal with unlimited storage, and service of process triggers a phone call, not just an email. The catch is the $149 renewal and a platform that is clearly built for compliance teams first, so solo founders who want something lighter may prefer Northwest's flat $125 with no year-two surprise.

Pros

  • $99 first year is the lowest introductory price among national providers
  • Same-day document delivery with a phone call when service of process arrives
  • Unlimited document storage in their Entity Manager portal
  • Multi-year plans lock the $99 rate, two years for $198 or three for $297
  • Covers all 50 states plus DC and Puerto Rico

Cons

  • Renewal jumps to $149 a year after the introductory rate ends
  • The platform is built for compliance departments, which can feel heavy for a single-state solo founder

Best for: Multi-state operators and compliance-heavy businesses that want the lowest locked-in national rate

Rocket Lawyer

Membership Required
$374annual fee
3.3
Get Started

Starts at $374/yr · No setup fees

Rocket Lawyer advertises its registered agent at $125, and that number is real but incomplete. The condition is not hidden. Its own agent page says the price comes with a Plus or Pro membership, in the line under the heading. Standard at $149 does not qualify. The cheapest route is Plus at $249. So a founder who wants only an agent pays $374 in year one, and the same every year after. Already paying for Plus for the documents and attorney access? Then $125 on top is fair. If not, almost every other agent here costs less.

Pros

  • Backed by a large, well reviewed legal platform
  • Covers all 50 states
  • Bundles with attorney access and document tools you may already be paying for
  • The agent fee itself renews at the same $125

Cons

  • The $125 agent price requires a Rocket Lawyer Plus or Pro membership
  • Standard at $149 does not qualify, so the cheapest real path is Plus at $249, making the true floor $374 a year
  • The membership that carries the agent is sold as a 7 day free trial, after which the full $249 year is billed

Best for: Businesses that already pay for a Rocket Lawyer membership and want the agent bundled in

LegalZoom

Industry Giant
$249annual fee
3.0
Get Started

Starts at $249/yr · No setup fees

LegalZoom delivers on the core promise of a registered agent by scanning documents promptly and offering a clean, unified dashboard. However, at $249 per year, it is one of the most expensive options on the market. The aggressive upsells and notoriously difficult cancellation process make it hard to recommend for bootstrapping founders. We suggest this service only if you already use LegalZoom for other legal services and prioritize platform consolidation over cost.

Pros

  • Prompt document scanning with immediate email alerts
  • Highly trusted, publicly traded brand name
  • Includes a compliance calendar for state deadlines
  • Extensive customer support hours including weekends
  • Unlimited cloud storage for business documents

Cons

  • Extremely high annual fee of $249
  • Cancellation process requires proof of new agent to stop billing
  • Constant upsells for bookkeeping and advisory services

Best for: Founders prioritizing brand name and platform consolidation over price

Bizee

3.0
Get Started

Starts at $149/yr · No setup fees

Bizee delivers a fast, modern registered agent dashboard at a competitive $149 per year. Same-day scanning ensures you never miss a critical legal notice. However, we found their customer support lacking and the cancellation process unnecessarily difficult. We only recommend Bizee if you are bundling it with their free LLC formation package.

Pros

  • Unbeatable $0 LLC formation package includes a free year of registered agent
  • Clean and intuitive online document dashboard
  • Same-day document scanning for rapid notification
  • Physical addresses available in all 50 states
  • Immediate text and email alerts for legal notices

Cons

  • Difficult cancellation process requires a phone call or chat session
  • F rating with the Better Business Bureau due to unresolved complaints
  • Aggressive upsells for compliance and virtual address services

Best for: Entrepreneurs seeking the absolute lowest cost to form an LLC ($0 + state fees)

Swyft Filings

Most Expensive
$596annual fee
2.9
Get Started

Starts at $596/yr · No setup fees

We do not recommend Swyft Filings for registered agent services. The company advertises a $149 fee, but this is charged quarterly, resulting in a staggering $596 annual cost. While their dashboard is clean and document scanning is fast, the service is ultimately outsourced to a third-party partner. Better alternatives offer superior in-house service for a fraction of the cost.

Pros

  • Fast same-day document scanning
  • Clean and intuitive online dashboard
  • Helpful customer support for initial setup
  • Standard privacy protection for your home address
  • Automated compliance reminders included

Cons

  • Exorbitant $596 true annual cost
  • Misleading $149 quarterly billing structure
  • Difficult cancellation requiring phone calls
  • Outsourced to a third-party partner

Best for: Business owners prioritizing filing speed over ongoing value

Inc Authority

Best Free Start
$249annual fee
2.6
Get Started

Starts at $249/yr · No setup fees

Inc Authority bundles the registered agent into its free LLC formation, so year one costs nothing if you form with them. A year of agent service on its own is $249, the same as LegalZoom and twice what Northwest charges, and it renews automatically. Cancelling means a phone call in business hours. Choose this one if you want the lowest possible cost to start and you are willing to move before that renewal lands.

Pros

  • Free registered agent service for the first full year when Inc Authority forms your LLC
  • Fast digital document scanning and immediate notifications
  • Online portal included at no extra cost
  • Covers all 50 states
  • Decades of industry experience since 1989

Cons

  • At $249 a year once the bundled first year ends, it is among the priciest agents here, twice Northwest's $125, and it renews automatically
  • Aggressive upsells during checkout and via phone calls
  • Cancellation requires a phone call during business hours

Best for: Budget-conscious founders who want a $0 setup and will switch agents later.

What Makes a Good Resident Agent for Maryland Businesses

Maryland's Articles of Organization never name a member or a manager. The form asks for four things. The LLC name, a Maryland office, the resident agent, and one signature. That is the whole public record. So your agent's street address is usually the only address anyone can tie to your business through the SDAT entity search. Put your house there and you cannot quietly take it back.

The state usually charges more than the agent. The Annual Report falls on April 15 and costs $300. That is one of the highest in the country. Six of the eight services on this page charge less than that for a full year, so the difference between the cheapest and the dearest of those six is small change next to a bill you cannot avoid. Two flip it. Rocket Lawyer, because its agent price only exists inside a paid membership, and Swyft Filings, because the fee it advertises is a quarter, not a year. Skip those two and you are buying the reminder, not the discount.

Stacked bar chart of the three year cost of a Maryland LLC across all eight resident agent services on this page. Every bar carries the same $900 of state Annual Report fees, plus three years of agent fees running from $375 for Northwest to $1,788 for Swyft Filings, giving totals from $1,275 to $2,688.
Three year cost of keeping a Maryland LLC in good standing, all eight services on this page. Agent prices from the StartupOwl services roster, verified August 11, 2026. The $300 report fee is from SDAT. Harbor Compliance is shown at its standard $149 renewal, its three year prepay is $297.

Missing April 15 costs less than most sites claim. Maryland grants a free two month extension to June 15 if you ask online by April 15. Miss the report outright and the penalty under Tax Property section 14-704 starts at $30 to $50. It tops out at $500. It then grows by 2 percent of that penalty every 30 days, not 2 percent of some larger sum. The fee is not the real risk. SDAT lists late LLCs after September 30 of the next year and moves to forfeit them.

How to Choose a Registered Agent in Maryland

Over three years these eight land between $1,275 and $2,688 once you add the state's own $300 a year. Northwest is cheapest. Its flat rate never moves. Harbor Compliance beats it only if you prepay three years up front instead of paying the introductory rate and then two renewals.

If the LLC does not exist yet, Bizee covers the first year of agent service when it forms your LLC, then charges $149. ZenBusiness is often said to do the same. It does not. Its agent service is $99 the first year and $199 after, or $199 a year flat when you bundle it with formation. Already have the LLC? Northwest and Harbor Compliance are the two worth a look.

Buy the calendar, not the price. Maryland's report lands the same day as your federal return, which is exactly why people forget it. A free extension only helps if somebody tells you it exists. Northwest and Harbor Compliance both send deadline reminders.

Hidden RA Costs to Watch For in Maryland

  • Portal service fee - Maryland Business Express adds a 3 percent fee to card payments. A $300 report costs about $309 when you file it online.
  • Changing your agent - A Resolution to Change Principal Office or Resident Agent costs $25 at SDAT. Add $50 if you want it rushed. That fee is yours, not your agent's.
  • The price may not be a year - Swyft Filings quotes a quarterly fee, so twelve months costs four times the headline. Rocket Lawyer's agent price only exists inside a paid membership, so the cheapest real path is the membership plus the agent. Both sit on the table above at their true annual cost.
  • Renewal jumps - Harbor Compliance and ZenBusiness both open at an introductory rate and renew higher. Bizee goes from free with formation to its standard rate. Northwest and LegalZoom charge the same every year. Inc Authority bundles the first year with formation, then sells a further year at $249.
  • Getting back in - Say SDAT forfeits the LLC. Articles of Reinstatement then cost $100 on top of every unpaid report and penalty you owe. The full schedule is in the SDAT fee list.

Maryland Business Compliance Overview

Maryland's Annual Report is due April 15. That is the same day as your federal return. If you cannot make it, ask online by April 15 and the deadline moves to June 15 for free. An agent with compliance reminders is how most founders remember to do either one.

What to Do After Setting Up Your Registered Agent

  1. Check the SDAT entity search first. Confirm your agent's name and Maryland street address are on file. A designation is not effective until SDAT accepts it.
  2. Apply for your federal EIN at the IRS site. It is free. Filing takes about 10 minutes online. You need it before a bank will open an account.
  3. Open a business account. Keep the LLC's money apart from yours. Most Maryland banks want the Articles of Organization and the EIN letter.
  4. Put April 15 in your calendar for the $300 Annual Report. Then set a second reminder. Early April is right, so you can ask for the free extension if the books are not ready.
  5. Do this before your first sale. Register with the Comptroller of Maryland if you will collect the 6 percent sales tax or hire anyone. Data and IT services are taxed at 3 percent instead.
  6. Turn on alerts in your agent's dashboard. A lawsuit or an SDAT notice should reach you the day it lands.

Frequently Asked Questions About Maryland Registered Agents

Is a resident agent the same as a registered agent in Maryland?

They are the same job. Most states say registered agent and Maryland says resident agent. Section 4A-210 uses resident agent throughout, and every national service on this page sells the job under the registered agent name while filing it with SDAT as a resident agent. So if a Maryland form asks for a resident agent, that is the one you already pay for. Nothing about the service changes, only the word on the paperwork.

Does Maryland require a resident agent?

Yes, and the rule is section 4A-210. Every Maryland LLC must keep both an office in the state and a resident agent. Section 2-108 says the same thing for corporations, which is why you will often see it cited on LLC pages by mistake. Lose the agent and your LLC can be forfeited by SDAT, which is the state's word for shut down.

Who can be a resident agent in Maryland?

Section 1-101 is narrower than most guides admit. The list is short. It must be a person who lives in Maryland, or a Maryland corporation, LLC, or limited partnership. An out of state company cannot do it at all. That is why the national services set up a Maryland entity first. SDAT also wants a real street address, not a P.O. Box, and your agent signs to accept the job.

Can I be my own resident agent in Maryland?

You can, and it costs $0. The catch is the public record. Because the Articles of Organization list no members, whatever address you give becomes the only one tied to your LLC. You also have to be there during business hours to take service. Process servers come to that address, and so does anyone who searches your name. That trade is the reason most founders pay someone.

How much does a resident agent cost in Maryland?

The eight national services here run $99 to $596 a year. Most sit under $250. The spread at the top is not about better service, it is about how the fee is packaged, a quarterly bill in one case and a required membership in the other. Compare what you will pay in year two, because the cheapest first year is often not the cheapest year after. Maryland only firms advertise for less, and what you give up is coverage in any other state.

What happens if my resident agent resigns?

They can quit, and section 4A-210 gives you little warning. Name a replacement first and the resignation counts the moment it is filed. Leave the seat empty and it counts 10 days later. After that your LLC has no agent on record, which is the same hole as never having one. Watch for this when you switch services.
