† Articles of Organization are $100. Filing online through Maryland Business Express adds a 3 percent portal service fee, so the cheapest online checkout is $103. Expediting is optional and costs $50 more, taking an expedited online filing to $154.50. Without it an online filing waits 6 to 8 weeks. How We Chose the Best LLC Services for Maryland

Every Maryland filing goes through one portal. It is called Maryland Business Express, and it adds a 3 percent service fee on top of the state's own charge. We rank the six services below on three things. What a Maryland founder pays in year one and year two with an agent included. Whether each one shows the state fee plainly or folds it into a round number. And whether the checkout treats the $50 expedite as a choice or as a bill.

LLC Formation + Business Identity

+ state fees

  • Preparation and filing of Articles of Organization
  • 1 full year of Registered Agent service included
  • Operating Agreement draft

Northwest is our top pick for LLC formation. The $39 package carries a business address, domain, website, email, phone line and mail scanning, plus the filing itself and a year of registered agent service. Nothing is pre-checked. It is privately held, and the Corporate Guides know the state rules they are quoting. The dashboard is plain rather than polished. At $125 a year to renew, that is a fair trade.

Pros

  • Flat $39 formation fee with no tiered packages or hidden add-ons.
  • Full Business Identity included: business address, domain, email, website, and phone service.
  • Free year of registered agent service with privacy protection.
  • Free mail scanning (up to 5 documents) and renewal reminders.
  • Same-day filing with no extra rush fees.
  • U.S.-based Corporate Guides who actually answer the phone.

Cons

  • Customer support is not available on weekends.
  • Online cancellation process can be cumbersome.
  • Trial digital services auto-renew if you forget to cancel.

Best For: Founders who want a complete business setup (formation, address, domain, email, website, phone) in one flat-fee package with no upsells.

Premium

  • All Pro features
  • Registered agent service included
  • Advanced Compliance Protection

ZenBusiness runs the smoothest filing in this category. The setup walks a first-time founder through every step, and the dashboard chases your deadlines for you. Starter is $0 and never renews, so a founder who buys nothing else pays the state and stops. The catch sits beside it. Pro renews at $199 a year and Premium at $399, and on Starter the EIN, the operating agreement and the agent are each priced on their own. A strong pick if you want a polished filing and you read the cart before you pay.

Pros

  • Starter is $0, you pay only the state fee
  • The dashboard is the clearest we have used
  • Phone support runs 7 days a week
  • A free first year of Worry-Free Compliance on Starter
  • Good mobile app, 4.6 stars on iOS

Cons

  • Heavy push for add-ons at checkout
  • On Starter the EIN, the operating agreement and the agent each cost extra, $99, $99 and $199 a year
  • Renewals climb, Pro at $199 a year and Premium at $399
  • Auto-renewing subscriptions are hard to cancel

Formation is the free part. The logo and website builders are easy to use, and the guided setup is beginner friendly. The catch is checkout. Plan prices stay hidden until the end, a $39 a month bookkeeping trial comes pre-checked, and the registered agent most founders need costs $199 a year. That puts the real first-year cost at $199 plus your state's filing fee. If you want branding and formation together, it works. If you only need the LLC, Northwest files for a flat $39 with no upsells.

Pros

  • Free Lite plan covers the LLC filing and standard processing
  • Beginner-friendly dashboard that is easy to navigate
  • Built-in logo maker and website builder in one dashboard
  • Customer support available on weekends
  • Guided questionnaire walks you through setup

Cons

  • Plan prices stay hidden until the end of the questionnaire
  • Pre-checked $39 a month bookkeeping trial you must cancel yourself
  • Registered agent service costs $199 a year, more than budget rivals

Best For: First-time founders who want LLC filing and basic branding tools in one place.

FileNow delivers a remarkably fast and straightforward LLC formation experience. We appreciate that 24-hour processing is standard across all plans instead of being an expensive add-on. The checkout process is completely transparent with zero pre-checked upsells or hidden fees. However, because the base plan costs $49 and does not include a registered agent, budget-conscious founders might prefer cheaper alternatives.

Pros

  • 24-hour order processing included on all plans at no extra cost
  • Transparent pricing with zero hidden fees or pre-checked subscriptions
  • Simple two-tier pricing makes choosing a package easy
  • Premium plan provides excellent value by bundling essential startup documents
  • Customer support is accessible via phone, chat, and email

Cons

  • No free formation tier available
  • Starter plan does not include registered agent service
  • Lacks advanced legal tools and ongoing compliance dashboards

Best For: Entrepreneurs who prioritize fast 24-hour processing and straightforward, transparent pricing.

Swyft Filings lives up to its name by offering some of the fastest LLC formation times on the market. Their 5-step setup process is simple and easy for beginners to understand. However, their aggressive upsells and missing registered agent service make their $0 starting price highly deceptive. We recommend them only if you desperately need same-day processing and know exactly which add-ons to decline.

Pros

  • Exceptionally fast processing speeds
  • Streamlined 5-step application interface
  • Knowledgeable and responsive phone support
  • Basic package starts at $0 plus state fees
  • No confusing legal jargon during setup

Cons

  • Registered agent service is billed quarterly at $149, which is $596 a year
  • Aggressive multi-page upsell flow
  • Difficult cancellation process for ongoing subscriptions

Best For: Founders needing fast turnaround who can navigate heavy upsells.

LegalZoom relies heavily on its brand recognition to charge premium prices for basic services. While the platform is easy to navigate and offers excellent legal document libraries, the checkout process is a maze of expensive upsells and auto-renewing trials. We do not recommend it if you are on a budget. You will end up paying significantly more for registered agent and compliance services than you would with competitors.

Pros

  • Highly intuitive platform that is easy for absolute beginners to navigate.
  • Access to a massive library of legal documents and forms.
  • Long-standing brand reputation provides reliability and peace of mind.
  • Customer support is available seven days a week.
  • Basic LLC formation is free excluding mandatory state fees.

Cons

  • Incredibly aggressive upselling for simple tasks like obtaining an EIN.
  • Registered agent fees are heavily inflated at $249 per year.
  • Checkout includes pre-selected free trials that auto-renew at high prices.
  • Standard processing times are slow unless you pay a $99 expedite fee.

Best For: Founders prioritizing brand recognition and access to an extensive legal document library.

What Makes a Good LLC Service for Maryland Founders

Maryland files LLCs through the Department of Assessments and Taxation. There is no Secretary of State here. Every filing runs through Maryland Business Express, and the portal adds a 3 percent service fee to each payment. So a service quoting you $155 in Maryland state fees is quoting arithmetic that sits on no fee schedule anywhere.

The SDAT fee schedule prices Articles of Organization at $100. The expedite is $50. Expedited means SDAT reviews it within 7 to 10 business days. Skip the expedite and an online filing waits 6 to 8 weeks. Nearly every guide on this search prints the $50 as a surcharge the state forces on online filers. It is a choice. If you are not waiting on a bank account or a lease, it is a choice worth making.

Bar chart comparing Maryland's two online LLC filing paths. Standard filing is $103.00 and takes 6 to 8 weeks. Expedited filing is $154.50 and takes 7 to 10 business days. Each bar separates the $100 Articles of Organization fee, the optional $50 expedite fee and the 3 percent Business Express portal fee.
Built from the SDAT fee schedule for corporate charter documents, verified 8 August 2026.

Paper beats slow online. A non expedited paper document is reviewed in 4 to 6 weeks. The same filing sent online without the expedite waits 6 to 8 weeks.

Maryland allows anonymous LLCs. Member names stay off the Articles of Organization. Only your registered agent and the person organizing the company reach the public record.

There is no publication notice here. That saves real money against a state like New York. No franchise tax on an LLC either.

You will need a county business license. It comes from the Clerk of the Circuit Court where you operate. Maryland has no statewide license, so the rule and the price both depend on your county and on what you sell. Our Maryland LLC guide covers the trade name registration many counties also want.

Your registered agent must be a Maryland resident over 18, or a business entity registered in Maryland. The agent needs a street address in the state. P.O. Boxes are not accepted.

What to Do After You File Your Maryland LLC

  1. Get your EIN from the IRS. It is free and same day. You need it before you open a business bank account or hire anyone. Apply directly at IRS.gov.
  2. Appoint or confirm your Maryland registered agent. The agent needs a street address in the state. If your formation service included agent service, check that SDAT has the appointment on file.
  3. Obtain a county business license. Call the Clerk of the Circuit Court in your county. Fees and rules vary by county and by business type, and many counties also want a trade name registration.
  4. File your Annual Report by April 15 each year. Maryland puts the Annual Report and the Business Personal Property Return on one form. You fill in the property schedules only when your Maryland personal property cost $20,000 or more. The $300 is due either way. File late and SDAT charges one tenth of one percent of the county assessment, plus 2 percent interest on that penalty every 30 days.
  5. Register for Maryland sales tax if you sell taxable goods. The rate is 6 percent. Alcoholic beverages are taxed at 9 percent. Register with the Comptroller of Maryland before your first taxable sale.
  6. Skip the BOI report. FinCEN exempted every company formed in the United States in March 2025. A final rule made that permanent on 14 August 2026. A domestic Maryland LLC files nothing. Only companies formed abroad still report. A letter asking for a fee to file one is a scam, and FinCEN says so.

Maryland LLC Tax Overview

Maryland taxes LLC profits on the members' own returns. State rates run from 2 percent to 6.5 percent. The top of that range is new. The Budget Reconciliation and Financing Act of 2025 raised the rate above $1,000,000 of taxable income from 5.75 to 6.5 percent, and added a 6.25 percent band below it. Then every county charges its own income tax on top. For 2026 that runs from 2.25 percent in Worcester to 3.30 percent in Kent and Dorchester. Where you live inside Maryland moves the bill more than founders expect.

Hidden Costs to Watch Out For in Maryland

  • 3% Business Express service fee - Every payment through the portal carries it. So $100 becomes $103.00, and an expedited $150 becomes $154.50. It shows up at checkout, not on the fee schedule most sites quote.
  • $300 annual report - It is due April 15 every year. The $300 is the filing fee for the report itself. The personal property schedules are separate, and you only fill those in when your Maryland personal property cost $20,000 or more.
  • $50 expedite fee - It is optional, not a surcharge. It buys review within 7 to 10 business days instead of the 6 to 8 week online queue.
  • County business license fees - Most counties require a license from the Clerk of the Circuit Court. The price depends on the county and on what the business sells.
  • $100 reinstatement - Miss enough annual reports and SDAT forfeits the LLC. Articles of Reinstatement then cost $100, plus every delinquent annual report fee, plus $50 if you need it reviewed quickly.

Frequently Asked Questions About Maryland LLCs

How much does it cost to form an LLC in Maryland?

Articles of Organization cost $100. The $50 expedite is optional. Maryland Business Express adds a 3 percent service fee to whatever you pay it, so filing online comes to $103.00 standard or $154.50 expedited. After that you owe a $300 annual report every April 15, starting the year after you form.

Does Maryland require a registered agent?

Yes. Your agent must be a Maryland resident who is at least 18, or a corporation or LLC registered to do business in Maryland. The agent needs a street address in the state. P.O. Boxes are not allowed.

How long does LLC formation take in Maryland?

Pay the $50 expedite and SDAT reviews the filing within 7 to 10 business days. Skip it and an online filing waits 6 to 8 weeks. Paper is oddly faster. A non expedited paper filing gets 4 to 6 weeks. Same day review costs $325 online, and the document has to be in by 2:30 PM.

Can I form an anonymous LLC in Maryland?

Yes. Member names are not listed on the Articles of Organization. The state never asks. Only your registered agent and the person organizing the LLC reach the public record. That makes Maryland a real option for founders who want privacy without filing in Wyoming or New Mexico.

Which LLC service is best for forming in Maryland?

Northwest Registered Agent, on price and on what happens next. It charges a flat $39. The first year of registered agent service is included, and no pre checked add ons run through checkout. ZenBusiness suits you better if you want the guided setup and the compliance dashboard. It costs more every year, because its agent renews at $199.

Do I still owe the $300 annual report if the LLC owns nothing?

Yes. The $300 is the report's filing fee. It is not a tax on property. It is due even when you answer no to the $20,000 personal property question and skip the schedules.
