That is not a courtesy. Delaware law lists it as a duty, and the bill is $300 every June 1. The same law says an agent cannot do the job through a virtual office or a mail forwarding service. Your agent can also resign and name nobody in your place, and that filing costs them $2. Choosing well here is mostly about who will still be there in year three.

Our accountant wants oversight of all state compliance mail. Can a registered agent forward everything straight to our CPA?

Most services let you add multiple notification emails, so your CPA can get every scan the moment it arrives. Ask for scanned same day delivery and unlimited recipients before you pick one, not all tiers include it.

Typically $99 to 299 a year for the mainstream services. Delaware also has famously cheap local agents in the $50 range, the difference is usually software, compliance reminders, and how fast documents reach you.

We are a non US founding team incorporating in Delaware. Does the registered agent basically act as our legal presence there?

For service of process and state mail, yes. Every Delaware entity needs an agent with a Delaware street address, and for foreign founders the agent is usually the only US address the company has at first. Note what it does not cover, it is not a business mailing address or a bank address, most foreign teams add a virtual address for that.
