Florida law requires every LLC to maintain a registered agent and office in the state. The office must now be staffed from 10 a.m. to noon and 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. on business days. Those hours are exact. Your agent's name and street address are public on Sunbiz.

ZenBusiness

Get Started

Starts at $99/yr · No setup fees

ZenBusiness delivers a premium registered agent experience tailored perfectly for first-time founders. We love the modern dashboard and the rare inclusion of weekend customer support. The main drawback is the $199 annual renewal fee, which is pricier than some budget competitors. We highly recommend ZenBusiness if you value an easy-to-use digital portal and fast document delivery over securing the absolute lowest long-term price.

Pros

  • Immediate document scanning and upload to your dashboard
  • Clean, modern, and highly intuitive digital dashboard
  • Customer support available on weekends
  • Shields your personal home address from public records
  • Excellent user reviews across Trustpilot and app stores

Cons

  • Annual renewal rate increases to $199 after the first year
  • Cancellation requires contacting support via phone or chat
  • Frequent upsells for additional compliance and financial tools

Best for: First-time founders wanting a stress-free, all-in-one compliance dashboard

Harbor Compliance

Best Multi State
$99annual fee
3.4
Get Started

Starts at $99/yr · No setup fees

Harbor Compliance undercuts every national rival in year one at $99, and their multi-year plans keep that rate locked. Documents are delivered same day through the Entity Manager portal with unlimited storage, and service of process triggers a phone call, not just an email. The catch is the $149 renewal and a platform that is clearly built for compliance teams first, so solo founders who want something lighter may prefer Northwest's flat $125 with no year-two surprise.

Pros

  • $99 first year is the lowest introductory price among national providers
  • Same-day document delivery with a phone call when service of process arrives
  • Unlimited document storage in their Entity Manager portal
  • Multi-year plans lock the $99 rate, two years for $198 or three for $297
  • Covers all 50 states plus DC and Puerto Rico

Cons

  • Renewal jumps to $149 a year after the introductory rate ends
  • The platform is built for compliance departments, which can feel heavy for a single-state solo founder

Best for: Multi-state operators and compliance-heavy businesses that want the lowest locked-in national rate

Rocket Lawyer

Membership Required
$374annual fee
3.3
Get Started

Starts at $374/yr · No setup fees

Rocket Lawyer advertises its registered agent at $125, and that number is real but incomplete. The condition is not hidden. Its own agent page says the price comes with a Plus or Pro membership, in the line under the heading. Standard at $149 does not qualify. The cheapest route is Plus at $249. So a founder who wants only an agent pays $374 in year one, and the same every year after. Already paying for Plus for the documents and attorney access? Then $125 on top is fair. If not, almost every other agent here costs less.

Pros

  • Backed by a large, well reviewed legal platform
  • Covers all 50 states
  • Bundles with attorney access and document tools you may already be paying for
  • The agent fee itself renews at the same $125

Cons

  • The $125 agent price requires a Rocket Lawyer Plus or Pro membership
  • Standard at $149 does not qualify, so the cheapest real path is Plus at $249, making the true floor $374 a year
  • The membership that carries the agent is sold as a 7 day free trial, after which the full $249 year is billed

Best for: Businesses that already pay for a Rocket Lawyer membership and want the agent bundled in

LegalZoom

Industry Giant
$249annual fee
3.0
Get Started

Starts at $249/yr · No setup fees

LegalZoom delivers on the core promise of a registered agent by scanning documents promptly and offering a clean, unified dashboard. However, at $249 per year, it is one of the most expensive options on the market. The aggressive upsells and notoriously difficult cancellation process make it hard to recommend for bootstrapping founders. We suggest this service only if you already use LegalZoom for other legal services and prioritize platform consolidation over cost.

Pros

  • Prompt document scanning with immediate email alerts
  • Highly trusted, publicly traded brand name
  • Includes a compliance calendar for state deadlines
  • Extensive customer support hours including weekends
  • Unlimited cloud storage for business documents

Cons

  • Extremely high annual fee of $249
  • Cancellation process requires proof of new agent to stop billing
  • Constant upsells for bookkeeping and advisory services

Best for: Founders prioritizing brand name and platform consolidation over price

Bizee

3.0
Get Started

Starts at $149/yr · No setup fees

Bizee delivers a fast, modern registered agent dashboard at a competitive $149 per year. Same-day scanning ensures you never miss a critical legal notice. However, we found their customer support lacking and the cancellation process unnecessarily difficult. We only recommend Bizee if you are bundling it with their free LLC formation package.

Pros

  • Unbeatable $0 LLC formation package includes a free year of registered agent
  • Clean and intuitive online document dashboard
  • Same-day document scanning for rapid notification
  • Physical addresses available in all 50 states
  • Immediate text and email alerts for legal notices

Cons

  • Difficult cancellation process requires a phone call or chat session
  • F rating with the Better Business Bureau due to unresolved complaints
  • Aggressive upsells for compliance and virtual address services

Best for: Entrepreneurs seeking the absolute lowest cost to form an LLC ($0 + state fees)

Swyft Filings

Most Expensive
$596annual fee
2.9
Get Started

Starts at $596/yr · No setup fees

We do not recommend Swyft Filings for registered agent services. The company advertises a $149 fee, but this is charged quarterly, resulting in a staggering $596 annual cost. While their dashboard is clean and document scanning is fast, the service is ultimately outsourced to a third-party partner. Better alternatives offer superior in-house service for a fraction of the cost.

Pros

  • Fast same-day document scanning
  • Clean and intuitive online dashboard
  • Helpful customer support for initial setup
  • Standard privacy protection for your home address
  • Automated compliance reminders included

Cons

  • Exorbitant $596 true annual cost
  • Misleading $149 quarterly billing structure
  • Difficult cancellation requiring phone calls
  • Outsourced to a third-party partner

Best for: Business owners prioritizing filing speed over ongoing value

Inc Authority

Best Free Start
$249annual fee
2.6
Get Started

Starts at $249/yr · No setup fees

Inc Authority bundles the registered agent into its free LLC formation, so year one costs nothing if you form with them. A year of agent service on its own is $249, the same as LegalZoom and twice what Northwest charges, and it renews automatically. Cancelling means a phone call in business hours. Choose this one if you want the lowest possible cost to start and you are willing to move before that renewal lands.

Pros

  • Free registered agent service for the first full year when Inc Authority forms your LLC
  • Fast digital document scanning and immediate notifications
  • Online portal included at no extra cost
  • Covers all 50 states
  • Decades of industry experience since 1989

Cons

  • At $249 a year once the bundled first year ends, it is among the priciest agents here, twice Northwest's $125, and it renews automatically
  • Aggressive upsells during checkout and via phone calls
  • Cancellation requires a phone call during business hours

Best for: Budget-conscious founders who want a $0 setup and will switch agents later.

What Makes a Good Registered Agent for Florida Businesses

Florida's current service rule requires the registered office to be staffed from 10 a.m. to noon and again from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. on business days. Those hours took effect under the October 2025 change. A service must cover that schedule and promptly forward any process it receives.

Ask before you hire. Is a person at the Florida office during both windows. The statute also puts the forwarding duty on the agent, so the answer should cover what happens after the papers arrive, not just where they land.

File the annual report by May 1. The Florida LLC fee schedule lists $138.75 on time and $538.75 after the deadline. That is a $400 jump. Florida may dissolve an LLC that still has not filed by the third Friday in September.

Sunbiz is a public record. Florida's LLC forms page warns that submitted information is available for public view. A commercial agent can put its registered office on the filing, but it cannot hide every address or owner field you submit elsewhere.

Bar chart comparing Florida LLC annual report costs. Filing by May 1 costs $138.75. Filing after May 1 costs $538.75, which is $400 more.

How to Choose a Registered Agent in Florida

Use a service when you cannot staff one Florida address during the four required hours. Privacy is the other reason. If your home becomes the registered office, its street address appears in the public Sunbiz record.

Northwest is our pick at $125 a year, and that price does not move. Harbor Compliance starts at $99 and renews at $149. ZenBusiness also starts at $99, then renews at $199. LegalZoom charges $249 from the first year.

Florida-only services advertise from $49. They are not in our comparison. The pattern to watch is a state name in the domain and a price near $49, which usually marks a site that serves this one state and nothing else. We have not tested them, so we do not rank them. If you might register in a second state later, an agent covering all fifty saves you shopping again.

Those four are not the whole table. The comparison above also lists services that cost more per year, so check the annual figure beside a name before a low first year price sells you.

Compare the two year cost. Harbor Compliance runs $248, Northwest $250, ZenBusiness $298, and LegalZoom $498. Harbor Compliance also sells two year and three year terms at $99 a year, which skips the renewal rate for that long.

Stacked bar chart of Florida registered agent costs across two years. Northwest is $125 then $125, $250 total. Harbor Compliance is $99 then $149, $248 total. ZenBusiness is $99 then $199, $298 total. LegalZoom is $249 then $249, $498 total.
First and second year prices for Northwest, Harbor Compliance, ZenBusiness and LegalZoom, taken from each provider's own pricing page and re-verified August 12, 2026.

One more thing that never shows up in a price table. Your agent can quit. Florida Statutes section 605.0115 lets a registered agent file a resignation, and the appointment ends on the 31st day after the state files it, or sooner if you name a replacement. The agent mails that notice to whatever mailing address the state holds for your LLC. A stale address there is how founders find out late. Keep it current.

Price is not the whole test. Check how fast the service scans process, how it alerts you, and what it charges at renewal. If you form through a provider, read the second-year price before taking a free or discounted first year.

If you still need formation help, compare our Florida LLC formation services. That is a separate choice. You can hire an agent without paying a company to file your LLC.

Hidden RA Costs to Watch For in Florida

  • A change costs $25. Florida charges an LLC $25 to change its registered agent. The state fee schedule is the source.
  • Naming one costs $25 too. A new Florida LLC pays a $100 filing fee plus a $25 registered agent fee, so the state collects $125 before the business exists.
  • May 1 changes the bill. An LLC annual report is $138.75 on time and $538.75 after May 1. The late fee is fixed at $400.
  • Renewal can lift the first-year price. ZenBusiness starts at $99 and renews at $199. Harbor Compliance starts at $99 and renews at $149. Both list those figures on their own pricing pages.
  • The intro price does not come back. ZenBusiness says the $99 rate applies to new subscriptions only, so cancelling and signing up again costs $199.
  • Rocket Lawyer's $125 is a member price. The agent is sold only inside the Plus or Pro plan, so an agent-only buyer pays $374 a year rather than $125. Rocket Lawyer says so on its own page, and every plan opens with a free 7 day trial before the full year bills at once.
  • A lapse can end active status. Under Florida Statutes section 605.0714, the state may dissolve an LLC that does not keep an agent or report an agent change within 30 days.
Two screenshots from Rocket Lawyer, the registered agent page reading Just $125 with a Plus or Pro membership, and the membership pricing page showing Standard billed yearly at $149, Plus at $249 and Pro at $349, each with a free 7-day trial button.
Rocket Lawyer states the membership condition on its registered agent page, and its pricing page shows the $249 Plus plan that carries the $125 agent. Captured 12 August 2026.

Florida Business Compliance Overview

Florida has no individual state income tax, but that does not erase every LLC return. The Department of Revenue says an LLC taxed as a corporation must file a Florida corporate return. A partnership LLC may also file Form F-1065 when it has a corporate owner. Classification controls the answer.

The Sunbiz annual report is separate. It keeps the public record current and costs $138.75 by May 1. It is not an income tax return.

What to Do After Setting Up Your Registered Agent

  1. Search your LLC on Sunbiz after the state processes the filing. Check the agent name and street address.
  2. Save the May 1 annual report deadline. The first report is due in the calendar year after formation, and the on-time LLC fee is $138.75.
  3. Report an agent name or address change within 30 days. Florida Statutes section 605.0114 explains the statement of change.
  4. Get an EIN from the IRS if your business needs one. It is free. Skip paid EIN add-ons.
  5. Register with the Florida Department of Revenue before selling taxable goods or services. Florida's general sales tax rate is 6%.
  6. Open a business bank account. Keep company money apart from personal money.

Frequently Asked Questions About Florida Registered Agents

Does Florida require a registered agent?

Yes. Florida Statutes section 605.0113 requires every Florida LLC and authorized foreign LLC to keep a registered agent and office in the state. The office needs a Florida street address. A separate service rule requires staff from 10 a.m. to noon and 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. on business days.

Can I be my own registered agent in Florida?

Yes, if you live in Florida and use a Florida street address. There is no service fee. You do have to sign a written acceptance filed with the state saying you are familiar with the obligations of the job, which section 605.0113 requires of every agent. Your name and address then become public, and the office must be staffed during Florida's set service hours. Section 48.091(4)(b) adds a wrinkle most people miss. If a process server turns up and you are not there, they may hand the papers to any employee of yours who is at that office, on the first attempt, and the service still counts. Be your own agent only if that schedule, that exposure and the public record do not bother you.

Does my registered agent have to be in the same Florida city as my business?

No. Your city does not matter. Section 605.0113 requires the registered office to sit in Florida and requires the agent's business address to be identical to it. It says nothing about your city or county. A Miami LLC can list an Orlando registered office, and a Tampa move does not force an agent change if the agent's address has not moved. What the address must do is receive process during Florida's required service hours, which is why a statewide service works the same wherever you operate.

Is it smart to pay for a registered agent in Florida?

Pay when privacy or fixed availability is worth the annual fee. Northwest costs $125 a year and keeps that rate flat. You can save the fee by listing yourself, but the public record and split daily service hours then become your job. The duty stays with you.

How much does a registered agent cost in Florida?

Northwest charges $125 a year and holds that rate. Harbor Compliance and ZenBusiness both start at $99 for a first year, then renew at $149 and $199. LegalZoom charges $249 from the start. Other services in the table above cost more, so compare the second year price, not the offer that gets you in the door. Florida-only providers advertise less. Most serve this one state only, and we have not tested them, so they are not in the table.

Can I use a friend as my Florida registered agent?

Yes, if your friend is a Florida resident and uses a Florida street address as the registered office. The office must have someone available from 10 a.m. to noon and 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. on business days. Put that commitment in plain terms before you file.

What happens if my Florida LLC has no registered agent?

Florida may administratively dissolve an LLC that fails to keep a registered agent. A lapse also shuts the courthouse door. Section 605.0113 says the company may not prosecute or maintain an action in a Florida court until it complies, and a court may add a penalty of $5 for every day it stayed out of compliance, capped at $500. So an unpaid invoice you wanted to sue over waits on the agent record. Reinstatement then costs $100 plus the annual report fee for every year you missed.

How do I check that a Florida registered agent is legitimate?

Start on Sunbiz, the state's own index. Florida Statutes section 605.0113 sets an agent's duties, and the state's filing instructions say a business may act as your agent only while it holds an active Florida filing of its own. An agent you cannot find as active there is the tell. Two more checks sit on that same page. Your agent has to sign the Articles of Organization, and the signature accepts those duties, so anyone who will not sign cannot be named. Your LLC also cannot be its own agent. You or another person in the business can.

Moving from Miami to Orlando next year. Do I need to update the agent address with the state or does it follow me

If you are your own agent, yes, you must file a change with the Division of Corporations when the address changes, do not let it lapse. This is the main reason movers switch to a service, the agent address stays put no matter where you live.

what actually happens if my registered agent misses a service of process? worst case

Daniel WongStartupOwl team

Worst case, a lawsuit proceeds without you knowing and you get a default judgment. Less dramatic but more common, you miss state notices and your LLC gets administratively dissolved. That is the whole job you are paying for, reliable receipt of legal and state mail.

Yes, any Florida resident with a street address can, it is free. Two tradeoffs, your home address goes on the public record permanently, and you must be reachable there during business hours. If either bothers you, services run $99 to $596 a year.

Daniel WongStartupOwl team

Update from July 10, 2026. Our tested picks now run from $99 for ZenBusiness's first year to $596 a year. Northwest is $125 a year. Florida-only services may advertise lower prices, but they are outside our tested roster. Check the current comparison because renewal prices differ.
