Spaceship Overview

Spaceship is the newer product from the Namecheap corporate group. Same founder (Richard Kirkendall), same Phoenix headquarters, same underlying talent, different technical stack and different pricing strategy. Spaceship was built greenfield, without the legacy Namecheap codebase, and that shows. The Launchpad dashboard and the Advanced DNS panel are modern, fast, and do not hide anything behind clicks.
The company launched in August 2023 and crossed five million domains under management by late 2025. Pricing is flat on most common TLDs. .com renews at $10.18 every year, .ai at $68.98 every year, .net at $11.40 every year. Free WHOIS privacy, free DNSSEC by default on Spaceship nameservers, free email forwarding with up to 100 redirects per domain.
Spaceship Inc is a separately ICANN-accredited registrar with its own IANA ID (3862), which means it is legally distinct from Namecheap even though the two are under the same corporate group. Founder Richard Kirkendall stepped down as Namecheap CEO in late 2025 and moved into a Founder and Chief of Strategy and Innovation role across both entities.
CVC Capital Partners acquired a majority stake in Namecheap in September 2025 at roughly a $1.5 billion valuation. Press coverage is ambiguous on whether Spaceship was technically part of that deal, so treat both companies as sitting under the same private equity owner group. Pricing and policies have stayed stable through the transition.

Spaceship Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Flat renewal pricing on .com, .ai, and .net
  • Free privacy, free DNSSEC by default, free email forwarding
  • Modern UI with a strong DNS panel
  • Public REST API and Terraform provider
  • Custom nameservers and glue records supported without friction
  • Trustpilot 4.4 with near-universal response to negative reviews

Cons

  • No phone support on the domain product
  • Same corporate group as Namecheap, so pricing could shift with PE ownership direction
  • KYC friction and occasional account suspensions on premium purchases
  • TLD catalog of about 470 to 480 is narrower than GoDaddy's
  • Some parts of the product remain tagged beta

Upsell Pressure & Hidden Fees

Transparency Check, We Documented Every Upsell

There are almost no upsells. The checkout offers Spacemail (email hosting) and Spaceship hosting plans as optional add-ons, but they are not pre-checked by default and the line items are clear. The ICANN fee is rolled into the displayed price, which avoids the surprise that IONOS and some others create at the last step. The only friction reported in the last 12 months on NamePros is occasional promo-code and VPN false positives at checkout.

5.0/5

5 = Fully transparent pricing · 1 = Heavy upsell pressure

What Real Customers Say

Is Spaceship Right for You?

Best For These Founders

First-time founder

The clean checkout and flat renewal make this the least risky default for a non-technical founder buying their first business domain.

Technical solo founder

Real REST API, Terraform provider, and full record-type DNS support cover the developer workflow without forcing you to leave the registrar for DNS.

Portfolio holder under 50 domains

Flat renewal pricing and free privacy keep total cost of ownership predictable without having to chase promo codes every year.

Consider Alternatives If…

  • You need phone support on the domain product

  • You want a registrar completely independent of Namecheap

  • You need a TLD outside Spaceship's catalog of about 470 to 480

  • You are sensitive to KYC friction on premium purchases

  • You need a mature, battle-tested product with no beta-tagged surfaces

Pricing, what you will actually pay

The TLDs that matter most for a startup in the US. .com runs about $9.08 standard or $2.90 with promo code COMPROS (one per customer), with a flat $10.18 renewal. .io is $31.98 first year standard or $14.98 with code IO85, renewing at $51.75. .co is $9.32 first year, jumping to $25.98 at renewal, so plan for year two. .ai is flat $68.98 register, renew, and roughly the same on transfer. .dev runs about $10.50 flat. .org is $6.68 first year, $10.00 renewal. .net is flat $11.40 across first year, renewal, and transfer.
Redemption fees are steep on .ai ($165.60 on top of renewal). Standard gTLDs are in the $80 to $100 redemption range. Either way, turn on auto-renew.

Free features worth the price

WHOIS privacy is free for life on every eligible TLD. DNSSEC is enabled by default on Spaceship nameservers. Email forwarding is free with up to 100 redirects per domain. Domain lock is on by default. URL forwarding is free. Two-factor auth on the account is free. The Advanced DNS panel supports A, AAAA, ALIAS, CNAME, MX, NS, TXT, SRV, and CAA records at no extra cost.
SSL is not bundled with a bare domain registration. If you are not buying Spaceship hosting, use Let's Encrypt.

Nameservers and DNS

Spaceship's Advanced DNS is the clean modern panel reviewers praise consistently. All standard record types, fast propagation in most cases, and a built-in propagation checker tool. Custom nameservers are fully supported, including personal nameservers (glue records) via the dashboard and the API. Switching away to external DNS shows a warning that active Spaceship-managed products will stop working, which is correct.

Support

Email, live chat, and a deep self-serve knowledgebase. No phone. Live chat reviewers consistently report engagement within 10 to 15 seconds and resolution inside 15 minutes for most account questions. The underlying support team likely overlaps with Namecheap at the group level, though that is not confirmed publicly.

Transfer policy

Transfer-in equals one year renewal at the standard rate. That year is added to the existing expiration, so you lose no time. Most transfers complete in about 30 minutes, with a five-business-day maximum. Ongoing transfer-in promotions have put .com as low as $4.99 during early 2025.
Transfer-out is self-serve. Domain, Transfer tab, unlock, retrieve the EPP code. Spaceship charges nothing to release a domain. The only constraint is the ICANN-required 60-day lock after initial registration or a previous transfer.

Developer ergonomics

Public REST API at spaceship.dev/api/v1, documented via OpenAPI 3.0. Supports domain CRUD, DNS records, contacts, nameservers, and SellerHub listings. Authentication via X-Api-Key and X-Api-Secret headers. Rate limits range from 5 to 300 requests per window. A Terraform provider is maintained under the Namecheap GitHub org.

Reputation

Trustpilot 4.4 over 4,030 reviews in April 2026. Breakdown, 77% five-star, 8% four-star, 3% three-star, 2% two-star, 10% one-star. The company responds to close to 100% of negative reviews within 24 hours. Reddit 2026 rankings of recommended registrars place Spaceship alongside Cloudflare, Namecheap, Dynadot, and Porkbun.
Consistent negative patterns include KYC delays on premium purchases, occasional account locks for alleged fraud or abuse sometimes without advance notice, and VPN false positives at checkout that briefly break promo codes. None of these are unique to Spaceship. They are worth knowing if you plan to move a large portfolio in.
