Porkbun Overview

Porkbun is a 10-plus-year-old US registrar (founded 2014, public in 2014 to 2015) that became the default 'avoid GoDaddy' recommendation on Reddit and Hacker News over the past five years. Based in Sherwood, Oregon, founded by Ray King (who also co-founded SnapNames) and Peter Brual.
Parent company Top Level Design LLC was a registry operator for .wiki, .ink, .design, and .gay until it sold that TLD portfolio to GoDaddy Registry in 2023, so today Top Level Design functions mainly as Porkbun's parent entity.
Porkbun crossed three million domains under management in October 2025 and was named best domain registrar in 2024 by USA Today and in 2025 to 2026 by Forbes Advisor. Reddit consensus lists Porkbun alongside Cloudflare Registrar as the default recommendation for founders who have been burned by GoDaddy.
Porkbun's pricing is the counterexample to the industry-standard bait-and-switch. First-year register price equals renewal price on .com, .net, .ai, .org, and most common gTLDs. When Porkbun does discount the first year, the sale price and the regular price both appear on the pricing page, and the renewal returns to the regular number. No fine print surprise at renewal.

Cons

  • No 24-hour phone SLA, phone is 9 AM to 5 PM Pacific only

Upsell Pressure & Hidden Fees

Transparency Check, We Documented Every Upsell

There are no upsells worth the name. Reviewers cite checkout taking under a minute from search to payment, with no pre-checked boxes, no surprise add-ons, and no dark patterns. The only optional cross-sells are the Articulation site builder and email hosting (Proton Mail or Porkbun email), both surfaced as options rather than forced add-ons. Porkbun states 'All prices include ICANN and any other fees' on the product page, so the checkout total matches the listed price.

Pricing Transparency Score

What Real Customers Say

Is Porkbun Right for You?

Best For These Founders

Non-technical first-time founder

The flat pricing and the 'all prices include ICANN fees' policy mean the number you see on the pricing page is the number you pay, year after year.

Technical solo founder

Free Let's Encrypt SSL, REST API v3, Cloudflare-powered anycast DNS, and modern DNS record types (TLSA, CAA, HTTPS, SVCB) cover the full developer workflow.

Privacy-focused founder

Free WHOIS privacy is on by default for every supported TLD with no paid tier gating the feature.

Consider Alternatives If…

  • You need 24-hour phone support on the domain product

  • You are building an enterprise with SSO, role management, and granular permissions

  • You want bundled business email with full mailboxes, Porkbun offers forwarding only

  • You object to Veriff-based ID verification on some accounts

  • You need a broker service for buying or selling premium domains

Pricing, what you will actually pay

Prices verified April 16, 2026 from Porkbun's product page. .com is $11.08 flat on register, renew, and transfer. .net is $12.52 flat. .org is $10.74 standard with a $6.88 sale on first year in April 2026. .io is $51.80 standard with a $28.12 first-year sale. .co is $25.03 first year standard, $28.03 renewal, with a $9.58 first-year sale. .ai is $82.70 flat to register and renew with transfer at $165.09 (registry 2-year minimum). .dev is $12.87 flat with a $10.81 first-year sale. .app is $14.93 flat with a $10.81 first-year sale.
Porkbun shows both the sale price and the regular price on the pricing page, and the renewal is always the regular number. No renewal shock.

Free features, the best bundle in the industry

WHOIS privacy is on by default for every supported TLD and free. SSL is free via Let's Encrypt, auto-renewed, covering the root domain plus up to 10 subdomains. Porkbun was the first registrar to bundle Let's Encrypt SSL on domain registrations.
Email forwarding is free up to 20 forwards per domain. URL forwarding is free with 301, 302, 307, masked redirects, and URI path preservation. DNS hosting is free and runs on Cloudflare-powered anycast with sub-50ms global propagation in most regions. DNSSEC is free via Porkbun nameservers or Registry DNSSEC for external nameservers.
Domain lock is on by default and free. Auto-renew is free and toggleable per domain. Glue records are free for hosting custom nameservers. REST API v3 is free with a rate limit of about 60 requests per minute.

Nameservers and DNS

Porkbun supports any external nameservers (Cloudflare DNS, AWS Route 53, Hetzner, wherever). Change nameservers in Domain Management, remove existing entries, add new ones, save. Propagation up to 24 hours per their KB, typically much faster in practice.
DNS record types on Porkbun DNS include A, AAAA, CNAME, ALIAS, MX, NS, TXT, SRV, TLSA, CAA, HTTPS, and SVCB. ALIAS is useful for apex-domain redirection cases where a CNAME at the root is not standards-compliant. Infrastructure is Cloudflare anycast.

Support

Live chat with human agents. Email at [email protected]. Phone at 1-855-767-5286 during 9 AM to 5 PM Pacific. No 24-hour phone SLA. Chat and email are advertised as 'available continuously' per Porkbun's FAQ, with softer expectations outside Pacific business hours.
Trustpilot review volume consistently cites same-day or within-hours email response, with resolutions that actually fix the problem rather than deflect.

Transfer policy

Transfer-in cost equals the TLD's transfer price, which for most gTLDs includes a one-year renewal extension. Requirements include the domain being at least 60 days old, unlocked, with auth code and admin email access. Typical time is less than one day to about eight days. Exceptions, certain ccTLDs (.cv, .com.au, .uk, .co.uk, .de, .cx, .ph) do not include the one-year renewal on transfer, and .nl and .de carry a maximum of one year of registration.
Transfer-out is self-serve. Unlock in Domain Management, pull the EPP code. No transfer-out fee. A 60-day ICANN lock after initial registration and a 60-day lock after a registrant change can apply.

Reputation

Trustpilot 4.9 out of 5 on 23,296 reviews as of April 16, 2026. Distribution, 91% five-star, 5% four-star, 1% three-star, under 1% two-star, 2% one-star. This is the highest-rated mainstream registrar in the comparison set by a meaningful margin.
BBB rating F, not accredited, with three complaints on file and zero responded to. BBB file opened January 31, 2020. The F looks alarming and deserves context. Complaint volume is three against three million-plus domains under management, and most complaints concern domains hosted by Porkbun customers that were allegedly used for phishing, not Porkbun's own service. The F reflects non-engagement with BBB process rather than systemic service failure.
Reddit and Hacker News are broadly very positive. Porkbun is routinely named alongside Cloudflare Registrar as the default 'avoid GoDaddy' recommendation. A dissenting HN thread from March 2025 argued that prices are sometimes equal or higher than competitors on specific TLDs, which is a fair critique on sale-only TLDs.

The Veriff controversy

In February 2026, a Hacker News thread surfaced complaints about Porkbun using third-party ID verification via Veriff on some accounts. Porkbun framed it as an anti-fraud measure. Long-time fans expressed disappointment. This is a live reputational issue as of April 2026, worth knowing about if you are allergic to third-party ID verification on registrar accounts.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Ten-plus years of operation. Three million domains under management. Trustpilot 4.9 over 23,000 reviews. Recommended by USA Today, Forbes Advisor, and the Reddit and Hacker News communities consistently. The BBB F rating is unrepresentative, it reflects non-response to three complaints and most of those were not about Porkbun's own service.

Yes. Porkbun supports transfers in on most gTLDs with a one-year renewal extension included in the transfer price. Some ccTLDs do not include the renewal year.

Yes, 9 AM to 5 PM Pacific at 1-855-767-5286. Chat and email are also available.

Porkbun uses third-party ID verification through Veriff on some accounts as an anti-fraud measure. Not every account gets flagged. If you are asked to verify, it is usually triggered by patterns the abuse team is watching. The February 2026 Hacker News backlash is worth reading if this matters to you.

Yes, Let's Encrypt SSL on the root plus up to 10 subdomains, auto-renewed, no configuration required. You do not have to generate or install the certificate yourself.

No. Cloudflare Registrar sells at wholesale registry cost, which is lower than Porkbun's retail. Porkbun is competitive, includes more free features, and allows any nameserver, which Cloudflare does not.
