IONOS Overview

IONOS is the current brand of the business formerly known as 1&1 Internet, with roots in Montabaur, Germany going back to 1988. The rebrand to 1&1 IONOS happened in 2018 and to IONOS alone in 2020. The group IPO'd in February 2023 on the Frankfurt Prime Standard at EUR 18.50 per share.
United Internet AG remains the majority holder at 63.8 percent after Warburg Pincus fully exited in March 2025. IANA Registrar ID 83. About 5.7 million gTLDs under management, making IONOS the sixth-largest registrar globally by total count. The US entity is IONOS Inc., headquartered in Philadelphia at Two Logan Square.
Public company, majority-held by a larger public parent. FY2025 revenue was EUR 1,316.9 million, up 5.5 percent year over year, with adjusted EBITDA of EUR 485.2 million. Pricing, the $1 first year and what comes after

The $1 first-year promo is the headline. It applies to .com, .org, .info, .online, .me, .site, .icu, and related TLDs for new customers. .net sits at $5 on the same welcome offer. The ICANN $0.18 fee is included in the displayed price.
Renewal is where the math changes. Standard rates in April 2026, after the promo year, are roughly .com $20, .net $20, .org $20, .xyz $15, .dev $25, .co $48, .io $90, and .ai $120.
Across five years, a .com bought at $1 first year and $20 each year after totals $81. The same five-year path on Namecheap lands roughly $69, on Porkbun roughly $53, on Dynadot roughly $54, and on Cloudflare roughly $44 at-cost. The year-one teaser is the cheapest in the category. The five-year total is the most expensive.
IONOS also ran a '2026 IONOS price adjustment' in Q1 2026. The adjustment was communicated to affected customers individually by emailed PDF instead of a public price sheet. That level of pricing opacity is itself a reputational issue worth noting.

Free features, one genuine perk and several gaps

Every IONOS domain includes a free wildcard SSL certificate at no extra cost. That is a real perk. Most competitors charge for wildcard coverage, although many include single-domain SSL free.
Free DNS hosting on IONOS nameservers is included, with an anycast network and 12 global POPs advertised. WHOIS privacy is automatic for natural persons under GDPR and NIS2. The legacy paid 'Whois Privacy' product was discontinued after NIS2 took effect. Domain transfer lock is on by default and free. Account-level 2FA is free, with TOTP, mobile push, and hardware security key support.
The gaps are real. DNSSEC is a paid add-on, bundled into Domain Guard at $1 first year and $15 per year thereafter. Every other provider in this review set offers DNSSEC free. Mailbox email is paid. Email forwarding is included. Legal-entity WHOIS privacy is not a baseline feature.

Nameservers and DNS

External nameservers are allowed. Switching away removes any IONOS-side DNS records, so rebuild them at the new provider before cutting over. DNS Standard supports A, AAAA, CNAME, MX, TXT, SRV, NS. CAA and DS records are available via help flows. The DNS editor is not the fastest in the category and is not API-first, although a developer API at developer.hosting.ionos.com covers DNS CRUD and domain management actions.

Support, the best pillar

IONOS advertises 24 by 7 US inbound phone support. It actually answers. Named Personal Consultant agents are assigned per account, a real, usable point of contact. Live chat is 24 by 7. Email tickets are available but slower. Multilingual support is strong across English, German, Spanish, French, Italian, Polish, and others.
The 4.7 Trustpilot score is disproportionately driven by praise for named Personal Consultant agents, which is a legitimate strength worth weighting. The 1-star complaints that make up about 9 percent of Trustpilot and almost all of the 408 BBB complaints over three years cluster around billing escalations rather than technical support. Translated for founders, if your domain breaks at 2 AM on a Saturday, IONOS will pick up a phone. If your contract renews unexpectedly, you may spend an afternoon on the phone trying to unwind it.

Transfer, slower than at most competitors

Transfer-out is self-service in principle. Disable the Domain Transfer Lock, click Show Authorization Code, and wait for the code. Paste at the gaining registrar. No transfer-out fee. The 60-day ICANN lock applies on new registrations and registrant contact changes.
Friction reports documented on LowEndTalk show IONOS occasionally refusing to release a .com auth code, requiring the user to escalate through ICANN compliance. A separate Quora thread documents a user whose IONOS account was terminated with domains still in redemption, and IONOS would not help recover them for a transfer. Both are edge cases. Both are documented.

Developer ergonomics

Public APIs at developer.hosting.ionos.com cover DNS record CRUD on IONOS-hosted domains and domain list and management. A separate IONOS Cloud API at docs.ionos.com covers cloud resources. Official SDKs are thinner than at Hostinger or Cloudflare. Third-party integrations exist (an open-source libdns/ionos Go client, Caddy and cert-manager integrations). The API is usable. It is not the reason anyone picks IONOS.

Trustpilot sits at 4.7 out of 5 on about 41,564 reviews. That is a strong score on a real volume, with 79 percent five-star and 9 percent one-star. Complaint themes in the one-star tail cluster on unexpected invoices and difficulty canceling, not technical failures.
BBB is A (accredited since March 2015), with 211 complaints closed in the last 12 months and 408 in the last 3 years. Themes include unauthorized auto-renewal, cancellation requiring phone confirmation, collection-agency referrals for disputed charges, long hold times on cancellation calls. IONOS responds to most BBB complaints with credits or waivers, which keeps the A rating intact, but the complaint-generating mechanisms keep generating them.
Sitejabber at 1.3 on 181 reviews is a selection-bias outlier, but the magnitude of the gap versus Trustpilot is itself a data point. IONOS is included for completeness. For most founders making a first-domain decision, it is not the right default pick. The $1 first year is a genuine deal for a throwaway one-year experiment. The 24 by 7 US phone support is a genuine strength. Everything in between makes five or six other registrars a cleaner recommendation.
