Store Setup and Dashboard Experience

We had a test store live in about 40 minutes. Shopify asked a few questions about our business type and product category during signup, then dropped us into the admin dashboard with a setup checklist. Adding products, setting shipping zones, and configuring tax rules were straightforward. The theme editor uses a drag-and-drop section model (Online Store 2.0) that lets you rearrange page layouts without touching code.
The Sidekick AI assistant appeared when we opened the theme editor. It suggested next steps and could generate product descriptions. Useful for getting started quickly, but we found the generated text generic. The dashboard itself is clean on desktop. That is $48/mo in app costs alone, pushing the real monthly spend to $77/mo before we processed a single transaction.
Transaction fees are where costs get sneaky. If you use Shopify Payments, you pay 2.9% + $0.30 per online sale on Basic. If you use a third-party gateway instead, Shopify charges an additional 2.0% penalty fee on top of whatever your processor charges. Our second ticket, about a hypothetical payment hold scenario, was handled entirely by a bot that kept linking to help articles without addressing the specific question. Reddit threads consistently describe support as adequate for basic questions but frustrating during account-level issues like payment freezes or compliance holds.

Privacy and Data Handling

Shopify maintains PCI DSS Level 1 certification, the highest standard for payment data security. SSL is included on all plans.
