Speed is where BetterLegal earns its price. Most rivals charge $50 to $100 to rush a state filing. BetterLegal builds two-day processing into the flat rate. If you need the LLC to sign a lease or open a bank account, that speed can be worth it.
Here is the two year math side by side, using Delaware's $110 filing fee as the example state. BetterLegal costs $409 in year 1 ($299 flat plus the fee) and $120 in year 2 for its registered agent. ZenBusiness files for $0, so its year 1 is that same $110 on its own, or $209 once you add the $99 agent it sells for the first year, which is the figure in our comparison table below. Its agent renews at $199. Northwest lands at $149 year 1 and $125 after.
One caveat on that state fee. Delaware's official Certificate of Formation fee is $110 on the Division of Corporations fee schedule, but BetterLegal's own checkout quoted us $140 for it in July 2026, $30 more, with no explanation of the difference. The chart uses the official number. If BetterLegal collects $140 at payment, your real first year through them is $439, not $409.
The Missing Registered Agent
Here is the catch. A registered agent is not in the $299 package. Almost every state requires one by law. BetterLegal charges $120 a year to act as yours (their agent page). That sits close to dedicated agents like Northwest. Budget rivals like ZenBusiness instead bundle a basic filing for $0 plus state fees.
Support and Cancellation Complaints
Support runs by phone, chat, and email, Monday to Friday, 9am to 7pm ET. There is no weekend help. Recent reviews are the bigger worry. On Trustpilot, several customers describe slow email replies and trouble canceling the registered agent renewal. One reviewer sent four cancellation emails over two months. Test the support before you rely on it.
Partner Offers and Privacy
BetterLegal markets a no-upsell checkout. We still found freebies dropped into the cart. These run from tax analysis to insurance quotes. They are lead tools for outside partners. Accept them, and expect sales calls and emails. You can uncheck them before you pay.
We walked the Delaware flow ourselves in July 2026 to check that claim at the source. The checkout is four steps, Details, Payment, EIN, Review, and none of them carries an add-on box. That is rare. But it is steep next to services that start at $0 plus state fees. A registered agent is not included either. You pay $120 a year for that if you want BetterLegal to fill the role. Speed is the one thing BetterLegal is genuinely built around, formations typically complete in about two business days, which is faster than most flat rate competitors. The honest caveat is that part of the timeline is the state's processing, which BetterLegal does not control, so a slow state can add time no matter who files. For a Friday deadline, filing today gives you a real shot, but confirm your state's current turnaround too. Do not assume the two day figure covers every state equally.

The base $299 formation fee does not include registered agent service, it is a separate add on, running about $90 a year as I write this. That matters because several competitors bundle a free first year of registered agent into their formation price, so the sticker prices are not apples to apples. If you plan to be your own agent, the $299 flat may still be a good deal. If you want an agent included, add that cost in before comparing.

Update, August 19, 2026. The agent price I quoted has gone up. BetterLegal charges $120 a year for registered agent service now, not the $90 I wrote in July. The point of the answer does not change. It is an add on, it is not in the $299, and you should add it before comparing sticker prices.

BetterLegal has been filing since 2016, not 2017, and its BBB rating is now B with 27 complaints, down from the B plus I quoted in July. On Trustpilot, check the live profile rather than the number I gave you, scores drift and ours is being re-verified. Everything else stands, real company, flat $299, agent sold separately.
