BetterLegal Review 2026

BetterLegal files your LLC in two business days for a flat $299. Speed is the draw. The catch is a registered agent that costs $120 a year on top.

How We Tested BetterLegal

We priced the flat package and the registered agent add on at betterlegal.com, checked the BBB profile for the rating and complaint count, and read the Trustpilot profile through its published score. Trustpilot blocks our fetchers directly, so that figure is read from the profile's own published data rather than scraped. Prices and ratings verified August 19, 2026.

BetterLegal Overview

BetterLegal launched in 2016 with one idea. Most formation services bury you in pricing tiers and add-ons. BetterLegal sells a single package at a flat $299 (see their pricing). You pick your state, and they file it.

What You Get for $299

The $299 base fee covers the state filing, an EIN, an Operating Agreement, and basic banking resolutions. Express processing is included too. You do not piece the core setup together yourself. That is the real appeal here.

No Refund Policy

BetterLegal runs a strict no-refund policy. Once you submit payment, the money is gone. There are no exceptions. Be sure about this specific business before you check out.

What BetterLegal Actually Costs

True Cost Analysis

Year 1 Total Cost

$409

Includes all fees + state filing

Year 2+ Annual Cost

$120

Recurring renewal fees

Year 1 is the flat $299 formation fee plus your state filing fee, which varies by state. Delaware runs about $110, for example. Registered agent service is not included. If you add BetterLegal as your agent, the ongoing cost is $120 a year. State annual report or franchise fees are separate and depend on where you form.

Upsell Pressure & Hidden Fees

Transparency Check, We Documented Every Upsell

BetterLegal advertises a strict no-upsell checkout, and the core price does hold at $299. The extras add up later, though. A registered agent costs $120 a year if you want BetterLegal in that role. State compliance and permit or license searches are sold as separate paid add-ons. The bundled partner freebies, like tax and insurance offers, feed third-party sales teams. None of it is hidden at checkout, but none of it is free either.

Pricing Transparency Score

3.5/5

5 = Fully transparent pricing · 1 = Heavy upsell pressure

What Real Customers Say

Reddit / Community Sentiment

Reddit founders like BetterLegal for fast turnaround and a flat price with few upsells. Many still call the $299 upfront cost steep, since it leaves out registered agent service. Some point budget-focused readers toward cheaper options.

Is BetterLegal Right for You?

Best For These Founders

Founders in a Rush

Entrepreneurs who need their LLC documents filed and returned in 1-2 business days.

Simplicity Seekers

Those who want a single, comprehensive package that includes an EIN and Operating Agreement.

Anti-Upsell Buyers

Users who dislike navigating confusing pricing tiers and prefer a transparent flat rate.

Consider Alternatives If…

  • You are on a tight budget and want a free ($0 plus state fee) basic formation package.

  • You want a registered agent service included for free for your first year.

  • You want the flexibility to get a refund if you change your mind after purchasing.

Speed Without the Surcharge

Speed is where BetterLegal earns its price. Most rivals charge $50 to $100 to rush a state filing. BetterLegal builds two-day processing into the flat rate. If you need the LLC to sign a lease or open a bank account, that speed can be worth it.

Here is the two year math side by side, using Delaware's $110 filing fee as the example state. BetterLegal costs $409 in year 1 ($299 flat plus the fee) and $120 in year 2 for its registered agent. ZenBusiness files for $0, so its year 1 is that same $110 on its own, or $209 once you add the $99 agent it sells for the first year, which is the figure in our comparison table below. Its agent renews at $199. Northwest lands at $149 year 1 and $125 after.

Bar chart of year 1 versus year 2 cost with a $110 Delaware filing fee, BetterLegal $409 then $120, ZenBusiness $110 then $199, Northwest $149 then $125.
Year 1 is each provider's formation package plus Delaware's $110 filing fee, with no agent added. Year 2 is the agent renewal. BetterLegal's prices were rechecked at betterlegal.com in August 2026.

One caveat on that state fee. Delaware's official Certificate of Formation fee is $110 on the Division of Corporations fee schedule, but BetterLegal's own checkout quoted us $140 for it in July 2026, $30 more, with no explanation of the difference. The chart uses the official number. If BetterLegal collects $140 at payment, your real first year through them is $439, not $409.

The Missing Registered Agent

Here is the catch. A registered agent is not in the $299 package. Almost every state requires one by law. BetterLegal charges $120 a year to act as yours (their agent page). That sits close to dedicated agents like Northwest. Budget rivals like ZenBusiness instead bundle a basic filing for $0 plus state fees.

BetterLegal registered agent offer card reading just $120 a year, available in all 50 U.S. states, and rapid document delivery, under a banner calling it the top choice for registered agent services across the US.
BetterLegal's own agent page, captured August 19, 2026. The price is $120 a year. It was $90 last summer, which is why we recheck it.

Support and Cancellation Complaints

Support runs by phone, chat, and email, Monday to Friday, 9am to 7pm ET. There is no weekend help. Recent reviews are the bigger worry. On Trustpilot, several customers describe slow email replies and trouble canceling the registered agent renewal. One reviewer sent four cancellation emails over two months. Test the support before you rely on it.

Partner Offers and Privacy

BetterLegal markets a no-upsell checkout. We still found freebies dropped into the cart. These run from tax analysis to insurance quotes. They are lead tools for outside partners. Accept them, and expect sales calls and emails. You can uncheck them before you pay.

BetterLegal checkout flow for a Delaware LLC showing four steps, Details, Payment, EIN, and Review, with no add-on offers
The Delaware checkout we walked through in July 2026. Four steps, no add-on boxes to untick.

We walked the Delaware flow ourselves in July 2026 to check that claim at the source. The checkout is four steps, Details, Payment, EIN, Review, and none of them carries an add-on box. That is rare. Most competitors line the same path with registered agent trials, compliance packages, and expedite offers you have to untick.

Final Verdict

3.6 / 5

BetterLegal files most LLCs in two business days. It does not charge extra to rush. That speed is the main reason to pick it. The flat $299 fee is simple, with no tiers to sort through. But it is steep next to services that start at $0 plus state fees. A registered agent is not included either. You pay $120 a year for that if you want BetterLegal to fill the role. Trustpilot sits at 3.3 across 376 reviews, and cancellation complaints are common. Choose it for speed. Skip it if budget is your first concern.

Frequently Asked Questions

No, it is not bundled. The $299 package does not include registered agent service. You can add BetterLegal as your agent for $120 a year. Almost every state requires an agent by law, so you will need one somewhere. Some rivals, like ZenBusiness, bundle a basic agent into their first year plans. That gap is real money. Weigh it against the flat $299 price.

BetterLegal processes most LLC formations in two business days. No rush fee is charged. That speed is built into the flat $299 fee. Many competitors add $50 to $100 to expedite a filing, so this is a real edge. State approval times still vary, since the state itself has to accept the paperwork. But BetterLegal's own turnaround is among the fastest we tracked.

No. BetterLegal enforces a strict no-refund policy that starts the moment you submit payment. There are no stated exceptions, even minutes later. Several Trustpilot reviewers describe long fights to cancel recurring services like the registered agent renewal. If you are unsure about forming this exact business, wait before you pay. Getting money back later is difficult.

The flat $299 covers the state formation filing, expedited two-day processing, an EIN, an Operating Agreement, and basic banking resolution documents. State filing fees sit on top. They vary by state. Registered agent service is not included, so budget $120 a year if you want BetterLegal in that role. There are no pricing tiers, which is the main draw for founders who dislike upsells.

Mostly, yes. There are no pricing tiers, so the core checkout is simpler than most. But BetterLegal does push partner freebies during checkout, like tax analysis and insurance quotes, and those feed outside sales teams. Add-ons like registered agent service at $120 a year and state compliance cost extra as well. You can decline the freebies before paying. Read each line item so nothing recurring slips through.

contract closing friday

i have a client contract that closes friday and i need an llc formed basically now, is betterlegal actually as fast as they claim or is that just marketing

Speed is the one thing BetterLegal is genuinely built around, formations typically complete in about two business days, which is faster than most flat rate competitors. The honest caveat is that part of the timeline is the state's processing, which BetterLegal does not control, so a slow state can add time no matter who files. For a Friday deadline, filing today gives you a real shot, but confirm your state's current turnaround too. Do not assume the two day figure covers every state equally.

Does the BetterLegal price include a registered agent or is that something extra

Daniel WongStartupOwl team

Legal & Compliance Analyst · July 24, 2026

The base $299 formation fee does not include registered agent service, it is a separate add on, running about $90 a year as I write this. That matters because several competitors bundle a free first year of registered agent into their formation price, so the sticker prices are not apples to apples. If you plan to be your own agent, the $299 flat may still be a good deal. If you want an agent included, add that cost in before comparing.

Update, August 19, 2026. The agent price I quoted has gone up. BetterLegal charges $120 a year for registered agent service now, not the $90 I wrote in July. The point of the answer does not change. It is an add on, it is not in the $299, and you should add it before comparing sticker prices.

Is BetterLegal legit or is a flat $299 with no tiers too good to be true

Daniel WongStartupOwl team

Legal & Compliance Analyst · July 14, 2026

BetterLegal is a real company, based in Austin and operating since 2017, filing formations in all 50 states. The flat $299 is genuine, there are no formation tiers to climb, and their draw is speed, usually about two business days. Two things to know before you buy. A registered agent is not included in that base price, it is an add on, and their public reviews are mixed, a Trustpilot around 3.5 and a BBB rating of B plus with some complaints. Fast and simple, but read the fine print on what is bundled.

Daniel WongStartupOwl team

Update, August 19, 2026. Two things in my answer above have moved. BetterLegal has been filing since 2016, not 2017, and its BBB rating is now B with 27 complaints, down from the B plus I quoted in July. On Trustpilot, check the live profile rather than the number I gave you, scores drift and ours is being re-verified. Everything else stands, real company, flat $299, agent sold separately.
