Setup and Bank Connection

We had our Wave account created and our first test invoice sent within about eight minutes. Onboarding is minimal: enter your business name, select your industry, and you are dropped into the dashboard. The Starter plan lets you manually enter transactions or upload CSV bank statements, but automatic bank feeds require the Pro plan. When we attempted to connect a bank account on the free tier, Wave immediately displayed an upgrade prompt. There is no workaround. If you want your transactions pulled in automatically, you are paying $16/month.

Invoicing and Expense Tracking

Invoicing is where Wave genuinely earns its reputation. Creating an invoice takes a few clicks. You can add your logo, customize colors, and choose from three templates. Estimates convert to invoices in two clicks, and the system tracks when clients view them. On the free plan, though, you cannot set up recurring invoices or automated late payment reminders. Those features are Pro-only. Expense tracking works fine for simple businesses. You manually categorize income and expenses into a standard chart of accounts.
